Have you always eaten healthy, or did you have an ah-ha moment that inspired you to make the switch?
I’m Italian, so I grew up on tons of pasta. I started eating healthier in college, but I still got my fill of late-night pizza and burritos. Once the luster of the college diet wore off, I decided that since I wouldn’t put garbage in my car’s gas tank, I shouldn’t put it into my own body either.
“ It is SUCH a game changer to work out on vacation! It makes the extra vacation drinks and desserts feel so much less indulgent. ”
We hear you’re gluten-free and eat mostly plant-based. Has being an early investor in Sakara influenced your diet and eating habits?
That’s exactly right! I’m gluten-free and plant-focused, but still eat some seafood. Being an angel investor in Sakara totally changed my eating habits as Whitney and Danielle taught me about loving your body (no matter what your struggle is with it at the moment, it’s the only one you have) and that we are what we eat 90% of the time. If I want to eat something that diverges from my normal healthy programming (i.e., ice cream, pasta, french fries), I eat greens before and after.
What are your favorite gluten-free bread and pasta brands? We know your pasta recommendation is gonna be bomb because you’re Italian.
The best GF bread is Everybody Eats in Brooklyn! I discovered it at The Nomad Hotel in New York and it’s the fluffiest in the world--you would never know it’s gluten free. The best GF pasta brand is Garofolo – you can pick it up in most major grocery stores. The blend of rice, corn and quinoa gives it the perfect texture. Also, the cauliflower gnocchi from Trader Joe’s is SO good. Just remember these things still need to be used sparingly, they aren’t magic and they still are pretty caloric.
You’re a fan of cocktails, just like us. What’s your fave drink?
Spicy Margaritas!
Do you have a workout schedule?
On Mondays I always do SoulCycle in the evening because I fly to San Francisco in the morning. Tuesday, I do back-to-back Core 40 and SoulCycle in the Castro, or just one or the other if I’m super tired. Wednesday through Friday I’m back in New York, and I work out with my best friend Steph and our trainer Sean at Iconoclast. The weekends are the best–Steph and I work out with Sean and then head down to meet friends at Forward Space for dance class (before celebrating over brunch, obviously). Save for Mondays, I always work out in the morning which is, 6 or 7am weekdays, 9am on weekends!
Your schedule is non-stop. Do you make time to cook, or do you prefer to use food delivery services like Sakara?
I tend to mix it up! On my busiest weeks I rely on Sakara to keep me healthy. I order in a lot from restaurants that are essentially pre-approved like Village Den in New York, The Plant in San Francisco, or Sweetgreen. I love to cook but that’s mostly reserved for Shabbat on Fridays or weekends with my husband, friends and family.
What workout are you currently loving?
Forward Space. Something really happens to your energy in that space–if I wake up on the wrong side of the bed, it’s a sure fire way to change my mood!
You have amazing skin. In addition to your impressive skincare routine, have you discovered any dietary tips that help improve your skin?
Thank you–you’re making my nightly routine *so* worth it! In addition to the topical routine, I eat TONS of greens and veggies–nothing is better for your skin. I also eat Sakara Beauty Bars, and add Vital Protein collagen peptides to my smoothies once a day.
There’s nothing like getting in an early workout before a big day to clear your head and take the edge off. What does exercise do for you mentally?
There’s something about running one more step when I thought I couldn’t possibly do it, or completing an additional rep. This mentality transcends the gym and reminds me that I can always push myself further, no matter how uncomfortable it might be.
A game changer for several of our members is exercising while they’re traveling for work and vacation (something they never did pre-ah.mi). As someone who travels a ton, what have you found to be the most effective way to stay active?
It is SUCH a game changer to work out on vacation (my sister is giggling as she reads this—she can’t ever believe that my husband and I work out on vacation)! It makes the extra vacation drinks and desserts feel so much less indulgent. When we are in a big city, I try to find a SoulCycle, Barry’s, or a similar class. Otherwise we just hit the hotel gym or do a video on our phones!
What do you do when you need some motivation to get yourself up and moving?
Nothing motivates me more than knowing Steph is meeting me at the gym–having a workout buddy really holds you accountable and ensures that you show up every single time. If you have trouble getting out of bed to hit the gym, find someone to work out with!
